Hieroglyphics

About a week ago, when Steve picked up Elliott at daycare, Paulina was excited to show us that Elliott has started trying to write his name! Check out the E, t, l and o around the tree.

Our daycare follows a child-led learning approach. That means although Paulina will say something like "time to write your name" and "would you like some help", she doesn't sit the kids down and have them copy their name or trace their name. They do other activities to learn letters and how to write them. Then the kids put together the skills in their own time.

When she noticed Elliott had written the letters she asked him "Did your Mommy show you how to write?" thinking that maybe we had started working on this at home. Although Elliott said "Yes" that was not quite the truth... although we read tons of books we have not sat down and worked on writing skills. In fact, we hardly even color or write much at home (guilt trip guilt trip!) Crafts have never been a strength in our family fun!

Elliott is proud of his hierglyphics and we know it won't be long before he's writing words and sentences. It will be fun to watch how his writing evolves.
