This past weekend Alina was in Charleston for a couple of days to enjoy a getaway weekand and attend Emily's (first) wedding shower. Gretchen tagged along on that trip, leaving Steve home with Elliott and Rosemary. Outnumbered, Steve got creative to keep the kids occupied and entertained.
The day started out with a trip to the zoo.
The trip began with the dolphin show (better than the one at the aquarium, according to the kids, and Steve agrees), the penguin feeding, tiger feeding, and a variety of animals. This included a very large American alligator and a "really big snake".
In addition, the kids had their first real ice cream cones.
On a cone.
That they refused to eat.
We've decided no more cones.
Their favorite part? The carousel.
The next day, Steve and the kids checked out a local air show at a small airport nearby. Air show might be pushing it a bit; the planes were mostly prop jobs with a few vintage aircraft thrown in. They do have a few jets at the small aviation museum, and the National Guard brought in a Blackhawk. Highlight for Steve? The B-2 Stealth flyover. Highlight for Elliott? Sitting in the cockpit of the T-2 Naval Jet Trainer.
Rosemary flat refused to consider sitting in ANY of the aircraft. Why? She was seriously concerned it would fly away with her on board. Somehow, she showed no concern that they might fly away with Elliott. Interesting...
Day 3 of the weekend was more low key (and low budget). Steve and the kids spent most of the day on bike trails in the park district. Rosemary is finally getting enough confidence on her glider bike to take it on outings; this was her first "real" bike ride. Pretty soon she'll be keeping pace with Elliott as he speeds through the neighborhood.
Everyone came through the weekend tired but happy. Steve and the kids stayed busy and outdoors, but with liberal application of sunscreen managed to avoid any sunburn.
