Father's Day 2009

Our Father's Day started off saying farewell to Steve's parents who had been visiting for the weekend to celebrate Steve's graduation. Coincidentally, Steve's parents were also visiting us LAST year on Father's Day weekend! Since Steve's parents departed so early we didn't actually celebrate with them but they did wake up at our house before their long drive back to their house in South Carolina.

Alina decided to mow the lawn in order to give Steve a break. The idea was for Steve to spend more time entertaining the kids while Alina mowed. And it worked out pretty well! Alina mowed the entire lawn front and back. We had almost 100% humidity so the sweat was pouring down... but owning a house means YARD WORK and we take our responsibilities seriously.

Elliott accidentally revealed Steve's gift (he's still learning the meaning of the word SECRET!) We bought Steve a milkshake maker. One can never have enough small appliances!

We thought about doing more yard work in the afternoon but Elliott became a little bored as the day went on. We had spent the previous day with Steve's parents doing lots of exciting things like visiting the Cosley Zoo and playing in the yard. Father's Day was turning out a bit boring for him.

Elliott: "Let's go swimming!"

Elliott: "I can put on the pull-up MYSELF" (e.g. the swim diaper)

Elliott: "I want it"

Elliott: "I can do it"

Elliott: "Now"

We filled up our kiddie pool and let the kids play in the backyard. Rosemary LOVED splashing in the water. Elliott liked stepping in... splashing... then stepping out... stepping in... stepping out.... Steve and Alina took turns playing lifeguard.

Father's Day would not be complete without a few words about Steve's wonderful fathering abilities. Steve is a father who uncomplainingly comforts Elliott in the middle of the night. He heads off tantrums before they begin. He rocks Rosemary for hours when Alina is sick and needs some sleep herself. He walks in the door after working a 10 hour day and spending 2 hours on the expressway due to a jack-knifed truck, drops his bags at the door and jumps right in with a smile to play with the kids. He is a loving, caring Father who is a wonderful role model for his kids!
